I always save my bits of fabric with good intentions, but this time, I actually followed through! You may remember these two refashions...
I still had the blue sleeves from the muumuu, the top of the polka-dotted dress, and the bottom of the black slip/underdress. Now it's time to put those scraps back together for something completely new!
First, I took the black tube from the underdress and the polka-dotted yoke, and I cut down the sides of each to separate fronts and backs. The sleeves of the muumuu were, obviously, already two pieces. Then I sandwiched the three fabrics (black, then dots, then blue) and sewed them together, and did the same for the back half. I flipped black and blue downward, with the polka-dots going upward still, and top-stitched this new seam for both front and back.
Lastly, I resewed the side seams, taking it in a bit too. And I was finished!
I'm glad I had the black underdress remnant, since the blue fabric is a bit thin to stand on its own. The polka-dot fabric, of course, is sheer as well, but I don't so much mind the public getting a glimpse of my shoulders. Scandalous!
Originally, as the idea for this top formed in my head, I wasn't sure if I was going to leave the pocket flaps on the front, but I actually really like the way it turned out. It's a bit of a throw-back to the 80's, but hey, isn't that how all the kids are dressing nowadays?
