R2D2 Beanie

EDIT: Okay, guys. That's enough. I'm flattered. Really. But no more. Not for now at least. Those of you whom I have already contacted, don't worry. Anyone seeing this for the first time, I'm sorry. No more custom orders. I can't knit the same hat over and over again for the rest of my life. If you would like to leave your email, I will put you on a waiting list and contact you when and if I can stand to look at blue and grey yarn ever again. In the meantime, I recommend you try to find a knitter near you or even learn to knit yourself. It's a great hobby.I never expected a little hat I made for my nephew's Halloween costume would draw so much attention. Thank you all for your interest and appreciation.

Carissa

Want a handmade Halloween costume this year? Have a geeky friend whose birthday is right around the corner? Or perhaps you are that geeky friend. That's okay. Be proud of who you are. Shout it out loud without saying a word. Knit this hat and wear it everyday, everywhere.

Note: This pattern is written such that a basic striped hat is created first, and then details are added with duplicate stitch afterward. If you prefer, you can use the appropriate chart and stranded knitting for rounds 8-12 (9-14, 10-15) and rounds 25-30 (28-33, 30-35), leaving less duplicate stitching to be done in the end.

  4. I made two of these for my sons this week, and they love them! They were quick to make and your pattern is nice and clear. My older son's best friend said "Cool!" when he saw them this morning - high praise from a 7 year-old!

Because I wanted a lighter grey I ended up using 'Vannas Choice' yarn, which is thicker so I used 4mm needles. I ended up with nice dense hats, though a little scratchy for my taste (I don't recommend the yarn really). They were tested sledding this morning, and all the snow stayed out very well!

Let me know if I can send you a photo, once I get around to taking some.

  49. Inspiring! I want to take up knitting because of this.

    ReplyDelete
  50. To Anonymous: Apparently, Caron has discontinued Simply Soft in Royale. But as long as your gauge and the yarns' washing instructions are the same, mixing yarns is just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Can you please make one for me? My favorite band (Nerf Herder) buys a shot of whiskey for anyone who wears an R2D2 costume to one of their shows, and the lead singer said that just wearing this hat would qualify. Thanks!

Did you use up all the yarn for the adult large size? What I have is only about 110 yards/skein, and I'm wondering if I'll need two skeins of either or both the gray and blue.

    Thanks!

  60. Carissa

Would Caron Simply Soft in dk country blue be a good substitute for Royale?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sure, the dark blue is fine if you're cool with it being darker. You could make it pink and purple if you really want to. It's your hat.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I am GOING to take up knitting because of this. My bf found your blog and said that he'd love to have this hat. He wanted me to ask my friend to do it (who has her own knitting blog at http://gradschoolknitter.blogspot.com/gradschool, but I'm going to learn to knit and do it myself. If I'm confident enough, I may even come up with some matching mittens.

Carissa, you may just have made a knitting convert...

  63. It's always fun to bring another over to our team.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The Fine Print of the pattern says "Please do not try to sell it or any product made from it", yet I also note you're not taking any more commissions of it and have have suggested people find someone they know to knit it for them. But does the fine print indicate that if they do find a someone (namely, me) that said someone can only charge for materials and equipment and not a cent for their time?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well, I guess I would prefer you try to work out a trade. But it's really all about the honor system. It's not like I would know if you did charge for one. Mainly, I don't want anyone claiming my design for their own or mass-producing them for craft fairs and the like.

    ReplyDelete

  79. After seeing this, I've been scouring Google and YouTube for knitting tutorials... I WILL do this, even if it kills me.

Also, I think a Death Star beanie would be a nice accompaniment, yes?

And to whoever posted the Metroid idea, I wanna do that too! =p

    ReplyDelete
  80. I love this hat!! Unfortunately, I discovered it the day before Halloween! (As I am costume-less, this would have been perfect about a week ago...) Oh well, next year!
I still plan on making one and just wearing it year round until I get to Halloween and just say it is my costume...

    ReplyDelete
  81. I can't imagine how you were selling these for $30! I'm sure it's because I've just learned how to do this, but I'm only at the end of the first blue row, and it's been at least 6 hours of work, not including all the times I've started over.... =S

    ReplyDelete
  82. I _love_ this hat! It may be too late now, but you should just sell the pattern. You'd make a fortune off of that alone without all of the repetitive knitting.

    ReplyDelete
  83. ok, i have searched the area for someone who could knit this hat, even checked on some of the sweet little old ladies at church, and have found none.
do you still have a waiting list going?

    ReplyDelete
  84. You should start a business, carissa! I'm just trying to make a regular old beanie for my bf, and it's just not working out for me! If you've got orders, you can make some serious cash! Good job, and keep knitting!

    ReplyDelete
  85. The hat is really awsome. I was looking for a treckie hat for my dad too bad he's not into starwars but if you ever make an enterprise hat. Id toatly be into it. I think im just gonna make him a marroon hat with the trek logo on it in gold.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'm trying to make the hat but I'm having trouble finding the Caron in Royale. Is there somewhere special it was purchased, or a good alternative to use...another color or another brand.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I believe that color has been discontinued. Caron Simply Soft in Dark Country Blue might work, but it's closer to navy. Or there's Simply Soft Brites! in Berry Blue. And if you can find Simply Soft Eco at a store near you, there are several shades of blue.

Of course, you don't have to stick with Caron yarns. I've seen substitutions using Knit Picks and Lion Brand, among others.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Thank you so much, happy knitting!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hi Carissa

I made 3 of these for my children last week. I hate knitting samples, so I had to have a few tries.
But they are great and my 5 year old son loved his. My 9 months old daughter used the opportunity to learn how to take off a hat, so she is not a big fan.

But I am. Thanks for the pattern.

A shame you have that thing in small print at the bottom. I am sure I could knit these beanies for a living.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I made the hats for my grandsons, and yes, they loved them. But now I have to do one for an Israeli boy who visited and also loves Star Wars.

    ReplyDelete
  91. You are genius! I am definitely learning to knit just to make this!!! Thanks. x

  96. For those looking for alternative yarns because of discontinued colors...
I found a yarn at Hobby Lobby called "I Love This yarn" It's an acrylic and very soft. I paid $2.89 for a 7 oz, 355 yard skein. They have several colors of gray that are suitable and a beautiful Royal blue as well.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Still tired of knitting that sweet R2 hat? If not, id gladly pay for one... let me know... spencer.tim@mac.com

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hi Carissa! I am teaching myself to knit and am in the midst of making this absolutely adorable hat for my 7-year-old son for Christmas. I have a couple of questions for you:

    I am still learning how to read patterns. In these directions, "Rnd 1: With grey, [k6 (7, 8), k2tog, k6 (7, 8)] around - 78 (90, 102) sts." am I supposed to alternate k6, k2tog, k6, k2tog, k6 k2tog and so forth or is it k6, k2tog, k6 k6 k2tog k6 k6 k2tog k6 k6 etc? Then I just keep going for 78 stitches?

And question 2: in these directions "Rnd 2 and all even rnds: knit even with same color as previous rnd." does 'even' mean that I knit the same pattern I did in the previous round, or does 'even' mean just plain knitting all around with no k2tog?

Sorry for the newbie questions! It's turning out really cute so far, even with a couple of mistakes that aren't really noticeable.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Yes, for the child size, Rnd 1 would go k6, k2tog, k6, k6, k2tog, k6, k6, k2tog, k6... all the way to the end of your rnd, at which point you should only have 78 sts on your needles, instead of the original 84.

For Rnd 2, knit even means no decreases, or k2tog, on this rnd. So if your last rnd was grey, you'll knit all the way around with grey; if it was blue, knit all stitches with blue.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thank you so much! I think I am already becoming addicted to knitting.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Any chance of you taking anymore custom orders for the r2 beanie?? please email me if you could

    muzara32@yahoo.com

    very serious.
thanks for the great gift to the world.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'd be very interested in a beanie as well. Please let me know if you're interested in making one last one.

    ReplyDelete
  103. i'm making this beanie for my boyfriend; he's wanted it ever since he has seen it on your site when you posted it.
i've only knitted one other thing besides this and that was a scarf. i just have one question.
i'm knitting the hat and i'm at the part where it's twisting the blue and gray strands and i'm noticing that the hat isn't looking like the finished one because, instead of the blue "boxes", it's just blue lines. i'm wondering why that is and if you can help me!
and, as a new knitter, please use as much detail as possible :))

    ReplyDelete
  104. As written, the pattern produces a striped hat. Then, after the hat is finished, you can go back with the grey and duplicate stitch the vertical lines between the boxes. If you'd prefer, you can learn to knit with two colors at a time (scroll down a bit on that page). That method is a bit more difficult to master, but still totally do-able.

Please let me know if those tutorials/videos aren't helpful, or if I've misunderstood your question and your problem is something entirely different.

  114. I love it, I'm a big Star Wars Fan, I don't knit though, I crochet. Anyway you could transfer the pattern? Also my hubby wants a Metroid Hat, I'm having a hard time finding a pattern, was wondering if you could help. Thanks.

  115. I can't thank you enough for posting this pattern. I had a friend ask me to make one for her boyfriends' birthday. We're all good friends, so I said yes. It was quite a little journey making this thing, but I did it. Watched A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi while making it. Definitely helped.

    Here's the finished beanie:

I modified a few things, and ended up crocheting the projectile, and only made one. I think it still works :D

    Thanks again!!

  117. SO, not to beat a dead horse but this really is a quite brilliant beanie design. I have a new nephew that is not old enough yet, and another nephew on the way, so at least two of these hats are in my knitting future, and I know once their Dad (my brother) sees them, I will probably have to make a third. I love your designs; keep up the great work!

AND, FYI - I like your designs so much I decided to finally take the plunge and start following some blogs! Yours is the first... ;+)

  135. I love this hat but I don't understand what the chart is for? I am assuming the 'color blocks' are knitted in by following the pattern instructions. Is the chart for the things that stick off the hat? I would love to make this hat for my daughter!!!! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  136. As I said in my note preceding the pattern, the instructions are for a basic striped hat. The chart is for adding the details afterward with duplicate stitch, like the vertical grey lines to separate the blue blocks. However, if you prefer, it is certainly feasible to knit the hat with stranded knitting (or fair isle) using the chart. Hope that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Thank you Carissa! I apologize for asking a question that you had addressed in the pattern. I did what I fuss at my children for doing; only reading part of the instructions and asking questions without having all of the information.

    Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  138. No problem. I won't your kids if you don't. :)

  139. How do I get the pattern to print. I have tried but it prints small and it is not coming out right. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
    Dawn

    ReplyDelete
  140. To print the pattern itself, go to File > Print Preview, which will show you that only the first four pages are pattern (the rest are comments that you presumably don't want to print). Then you can click print and select the option to only print pages 1-4.

To print the charts, you may have to right-click on your chosen size and select Save As. Then you can go to wherever you save it on your computer, and open and print it from there. I know that's annoying, but if it's possible to print the images larger through blogger, I can't figure it out.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Amazing your a genius, My girlfriend my try it, I might try it.. Thats the best thing I've seen in ages...

    ReplyDelete
  142. OMG I volunteered to knit this hat for our IT guy. So I finally got it going and it's so easy! BUT his head measurement is 23" so I made the Adult Large and it's way too big. My gauge is absolutely on target. It seems to be about 3" too wide, based on what we folded - so do you think the 21" will be too small?

I have to have this finished in the next few days.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Do you happen to have infant sizing for this hat? I have a couple friends expecting who would love this!

    ReplyDelete
  144. No, I didn't write up infant sizes. However, if you work with a fingering weight yarn at a gauge of 28 sts per 4 inches, the given sizes would translate to:
    Child > Preemie (12" circumference)
    Adult S > Newborn (14")
    Adult L > 3-6 months (15")

    Hope that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  145. Bohemian, if the large size is coming out too large, then I would say try the adult small size instead. Knitting is pretty stretchy, so a slightly-too-small hat is certainly better than way-too-large hat.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I am going to make a crochet attempt on your pattern we shall see wish me luck. I can knit but crochet is faster and I soooo have the needlework add

  151. I'm sure it's possible to crochet a similar hat, but unfortunately, I'm not as advanced a crocheter to feel confident in my ability to do that. However, there appear to be at least 1, 2, 3 crochet versions available already, according to a Ravelry search.

    Good luck!
